Mark & friends Words of Wisdom:
Just a reminder, whenever you hear Mark or anyone else speak some particular wisdom send the bowling group a text to have it added here.
I hear Mark has a new name for late dropping pins – guillotined pins (because it takes a while for the head to drop after the blade hits) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I’m not sure I want to know where that came from.
Tips & Tricks:
This week I’m looking at dealing with carry down. See bowling this month, 10/6/2026.
It is said that the enemy of an effective practice session is keeping score. However, depending on your goals, keeping score can have benefits. This week’s tip explains when bowling for score is not only okay, but recommended, and when the old advice holds true.
Keeping Score During Practice
When working on developing your technique or adding a skill, the old advice of ignoring the scoreboard remains true. In fact, it’s best not to even have pins if the center has the capacity to do that.
When you are preparing for an event and want to mentally rehearse for the pressures of competition, or ensure that your lane play skills are sharp, keeping score is the only way to gauge your preparation.
Essentially, the more your practice focuses on the physical execution of a skill, the more you should avoid scoring. When your practice focuses on the application of your skills, then keeping score can be an effective method of evaluation.
Upon Reflection:
I had a bad day of practice on Friday. I’m clearly still struggling with some things related to the new ball. I think I should be using both balls in practice going forward so I will be more comfortable with a ball change when I need it. What are you going to focus on?
Next Week:
