Week 3 – September 22, 2026

Weekly Summary:

Oddballs,

A small setback this week. We moved down to 18th place from 12th. We won total in the third game by 3 pins! A tough week; they have added a few ringers to their team this year. On average games were decided by 51 pins this week.

We won 22 and lost 58:

  • Brian had a strong night posting 2 slots in the Season Highs
  • Mark came alive in the third and posted 2 slots in the Season Highs

Mark, this is God speaking – get your butt in gear.

Tips & Tricks:

This week I’m looking at Developing a more powerful release. See bowling this month, 9/22/2026.

The release is the last physical action of the approach that matters. There is some movement after the ball leaves your hand (the most important being the follow through) that can indicate what’s happening in your approach. But it is the release that imparts all the energy into the ball.

Each element of the approach—the arm swing, body movement, and footwork—combines to create energy that is transferred into the ball at the release.

This energy transfer happens in different directions:

  • More forward motion creates more ball speed.
  • More upward motion as the fingers travel from the lower half of the ball to the upper half creates a higher rev rate.

Creating a more powerful release is all about making sure the fingers stay in the ball as long as possible, while traveling as quickly as possible around the ball.

The release is the result of the movements and positions that come before it. However, the key principles remain:

  • Start the release with your fingers below the equator of the ball.
  • Wait as long as possible to start the hand movement, then move the fingers as quickly as possible from the lower half of the ball to the upper half.
  • The longer the fingers stay in the ball and the faster they move, the higher the rev rate and the better the resulting ball motion.

“Grabbing” the ball and lifting straight up with the fingers causes them to exit the ball faster, negating the rev rate and creating a less effective ball motion.

Upon Reflection:

I missed my cue to move my feet again in practice last week. That resulted in having far fewer strikes in the later games. This in turn meant I had more opportunities to test my accuracy on spares. I went from one open in the first to 2 then 5. I finally started getting a handle on them in the 4th. I am going to continue not using my spare ball but I still have some things to work out. What are you going to focus on?

Looks like we’re giving handicap again. We got 45 from these guys last year.
